Each year, the JEC Composites Innovation Awards recognise groundbreaking, creative collaborative projects that showcase the full potential of composite materials. We’re incredibly proud to share that, together with our partner Curve Works, we are among the three nominees in the Maritime Transportation and Shipbuilding category.

The jury’s comments on the nomination;
A groundbreaking sailing yacht was built using Curve Works’ innovative 3D Core Kit, resulting in significantly less waste than traditional mould construction. A wooden construction frame was used to assemble and bond the thermoformed foam core, which serves as the basis for laminating the inner and outer carbon structures.

Curve Works’ 3D Core Kit consists of thermoformed sheets shaped on adaptive moulds. Paul Dijkstra Composites made ingenious use of this 3D Core Kit as a mould and substructure for a new 46ft yacht. A simple wooden frame served as a mould for the kit, which was bonded together to form a vacuum-tight structure and overlaminated with carbon laminate sheets. This approach bypasses the plug-and-mould process, resulting in shorter build times and minimal waste; moreover, the first hull also served as a production-ready mould.

The other two nominees are OceanWings, from the French company Ayro, and the Hydrogen Chase Boat developed for the America’s Cup by the Swiss company Gurit. We’re extremely proud, but also surprised, to find ourselves listed alongside such big names in the composites industry. The winners will be announced on 8 February 2024.
